Computer and IT occupations are projected to grow much faster than average, with hundreds of thousands of openings each year. But “get into tech” is not a strategy. The useful move is to choose a ladder where entry skills connect to higher-value roles and where your existing domain experience gives you an edge.
Pick the ladder by work, not salary screenshots
Cybersecurity rewards people who like investigation, controls, systems and risk. Systems/cloud work rewards troubleshooting and infrastructure thinking. Data rewards statistics, querying and business interpretation. Software QA/automation rewards precision and repeatability. Product/technical operations rewards coordination across users, systems and teams.
Spend one weekend doing realistic tasks from three ladders before paying for training. Configure a cloud VM, analyze a public dataset, write automated tests, inspect security logs, or document a broken workflow. Notice what type of problem keeps your attention.
Build the minimum viable skill stack
For each target job, collect 30 real job descriptions and count recurring skills. Build a frequency table. If SQL appears in 22 of 30 data roles, it outranks a trendy certificate appearing twice. If Linux, networking, IAM and scripting dominate cloud roles, build there first.
Divide requirements into foundation, tool, and evidence. Foundation might be networking or SQL. Tool might be AWS, Azure, Splunk, GitHub Actions or Power BI. Evidence is the project that proves you can use them. Training without evidence is weak.
Use stepping-stone roles intelligently
Your first role does not need to be the dream role. Technical support can lead to systems administration; systems work can lead to cloud or security; QA can lead to automation; analyst roles can lead to data engineering or product analytics. Choose a first job that gives you access to the systems you want to master next.
Ask in interviews what tools the team uses, what access junior employees receive, whether there is rotation, and where people in the role moved after 18–24 months. You are evaluating the learning environment as much as the paycheck.
Build a 12-month compounding plan
Quarter 1: foundations plus two projects. Quarter 2: entry role/apprenticeship applications plus a role-specific credential only if employers actually request it. Quarter 3: deeper production skill and one public case study. Quarter 4: target the next rung, not another beginner course.
The rule is simple: every quarter should add either production experience, a stronger technical artifact, a recognized credential tied to job demand, or a relationship with someone who can evaluate your work.
The evidence rule
For every skill you claim, attach one piece of evidence: a project, work sample, benchmark, contribution, credential tied to real demand, or person who has seen you perform it. Replace “I know” with “here is what I built, fixed, analyzed or shipped.”
Review your target roles monthly. If the market repeatedly asks for a skill you do not have, add it. If a course teaches something employers rarely request and you cannot turn it into proof of work, deprioritize it.
Build a skill graph from the jobs you actually want
Collect 30–50 job postings across entry, mid-level and next-step roles in one ladder. Normalize synonymous skills—“AWS IAM” and “cloud identity,” for example—then count frequency by career level. You are building a map of which skills unlock the first job and which skills unlock the second. That is far more useful than following a generic certification roadmap built for everyone.
Mark each skill as concept, tool or production behavior. Networking is a concept area; Wireshark is a tool; diagnosing a real connectivity incident is production behavior. Employers often reject candidates who have tool vocabulary but cannot reason through a system. Your study plan should deliberately pair concepts with hands-on evidence.
Every three months, re-sample the market. Tool demand changes; foundations move more slowly. If your target roles increasingly ask for automation, cloud identity, data governance or AI-assisted workflows, update projects before buying another course. The career ladder should be driven by observed market signals and your accumulating strengths.
