Understand plugins
before you use them.
Plugins can give ChatGPT approved ways to work with other services. Before you start connecting them, understand what a plugin is and the simple process for using one.
Learn what a ChatGPT plugin is and how you use one.
A plugin is one way ChatGPT can work with another service instead of being limited to the information and tools inside the conversation itself. The exact abilities depend on the plugin and the access you approve.
What Is a Plugin?
A plugin is a connection that gives ChatGPT access to specific abilities from another service or system. Depending on the plugin, it may let ChatGPT find information, read information you have access to, create something, update something, or perform another supported action.
A plugin does not give ChatGPT unlimited access to the outside service. It can only use the abilities that plugin supports and the permissions you approve.
Examples: A calendar plugin may help ChatGPT work with your schedule. An email plugin may help find or prepare messages. A design or deployment plugin may expose actions for creating or publishing work.
Why this matters: A plugin can turn ChatGPT from something that only talks about a service into something that can work with that service when the connection and permissions allow it.
Open-book answer:A plugin is a connection that gives ChatGPT access to specific abilities from another service or system. It can only use the abilities the plugin supports and the permissions I approve.
How Is a Plugin Used?
First, choose a plugin that supports the job you want to do. Then connect or authorize it so ChatGPT has the approved access it needs. After that, tell ChatGPT what you want done in normal language.
ChatGPT can use the plugin's supported actions to do the permitted work. If the plugin cannot perform a certain action, connecting it does not magically add that ability.
Simple flow: Choose the right plugin → connect it → approve access → tell ChatGPT the job → ChatGPT uses the plugin when it supports that job → review the result.
Why this matters: You do not need to learn the service's technical API just to use a supported plugin. You still need to choose the right tool, approve access carefully, and check the result.
Open-book answer:To use a plugin, choose one that supports the job, connect or authorize it, approve the needed access, tell ChatGPT what you want done, let ChatGPT use the supported action, and review the result.
